Schema Markup Guide for SEO (2026): The Best Structured Data for Every Website & Page Type

Muhammad Hamza August 2026 16 min read

The best schema markup depends on your business model, your page type and the search intent behind the query. There is no single structured data type that is best for an entire website. In practice you combine one accurate primary schema with a small set of supporting schemas that describe the relationships around it — publisher, author, breadcrumb, offer and area served.

This guide from SEOing maps the correct schema for 40+ niches, every common page type, and gives copy-ready JSON-LD stacks for local business, e-commerce, SaaS and publisher websites. It is the same structured data framework we deploy on technical SEO projects across Dubai and the UAE.

    1. Best Schema Markup by Business Niche

Start with the entity your business actually is. A dentist is not a generic organisation, and a swimwear store is not a service company. Choosing the most specific valid type gives search engines — and AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews — an unambiguous definition of what you do and where you operate.

    2. Schema Markup by Page Type

This matters more than picking schema by niche alone. A single website contains many page types, and each one describes a different entity. The homepage describes the company, a service page describes a service, a product page describes a product. Mapping structured data per template is how you keep a large site semantically clean at scale.

    Page TypeRecommended Schema
    HomepageOrganization / LocalBusiness

    3. Local SEO: The Best LocalBusiness Schema Setup

For a local business, do not drop generic LocalBusiness on every page. Use the most specific valid subtype — it inherits everything from LocalBusiness while telling Google exactly what category of business you are. This is one of the highest-leverage fixes in any local SEO service.

    BusinessSchema Path
    DentistDentist → LocalBusiness
    RestaurantRestaurant → LocalBusiness
    PlumberPlumber → LocalBusiness
    Auto repairAutoRepair → LocalBusiness
    Real estateRealEstateAgent → LocalBusiness
    GymExerciseGym → LocalBusiness
    HotelHotel → LocalBusiness
    Law firmLegalService → LocalBusiness
    General businessLocalBusiness → Organization

Properties every LocalBusiness schema should contain

    • @id
    • name
    • url
    • logo
    • image
    • telephone
    • address
    • geo
    • openingHoursSpecification
    • sameAs
    • areaServed
    • priceRange
    • hasMap
    • serviceArea
    • relevant Service
    • legitimate Review / AggregateRating

    Example structure

    LocalBusiness
    │
    ├── Organization information
    ├── Address
    ├── Geo
    ├── Opening hours
    ├── Phone
    ├── Website
    ├── Social profiles
    ├── Service
    ├── Area served
└── Reviews / Ratings (if eligible)

Important: never add fake ratings, fake reviews, fake prices, or properties that are not visible and accurate on the page. Fabricated markup is a structured data spam violation and can cost you rich result eligibility site-wide.

    4. E-commerce Schema: Product, Offer and Review

On an e-commerce website, Product schema is the single most important structured data type on individual product pages. It powers price, availability, rating and merchant listing features. Every field you populate correctly increases the surface area your listing can occupy in the SERP.

    Recommended structure

    Product
    ├── name
    ├── image
    ├── description
    ├── sku
    ├── brand
    ├── offers
    │ ├── price
    │ ├── priceCurrency
    │ ├── availability
    │ └── url
    ├── aggregateRating
    └── review

Entity chain on a product page

    Product
       ↓
    Brand
       ↓
    Offer
       ↓
    AggregateRating
       ↓
    Review

+ BreadcrumbList on the same page

Category pages should use CollectionPage with an ItemList rather than duplicating Product markup — see our e-commerce SEO approach for the full template map.

    5. Blog & Informational Website Schema

Use Article for a standard informational page, BlogPosting for a blog post, and NewsArticle for breaking or time-sensitive news. All three share the same core property set, so the implementation cost is identical — pick the one that matches the content honestly.

    Strong Article implementation

    Article
    ├── headline
    ├── description
    ├── image
    ├── datePublished
    ├── dateModified
    ├── author
    │ └── Person
    ├── publisher
    │ └── Organization
    ├── mainEntityOfPage
    └── articleSection

Example: "How to Choose the Best Washing Machine"

    Article / BlogPosting
       ↓
    author → Person
    publisher → Organization
    breadcrumb → BreadcrumbList

    6. Service Business Schema

Take an SEO agency as the example. The homepage uses ProfessionalService or the appropriate local-business type. Each individual service page uses Service with the company as the provider. This is far better than forcing every service page to be its own LocalBusiness — which creates duplicate business entities and confuses Google about which page represents the company.

    /seo-services/

    Service
    ├── name
    ├── description
    ├── provider
    │ └── Organization / LocalBusiness
    ├── areaServed
    └── offers (when appropriate)

    /local-seo/

    Service
    ├── name: "Local SEO Service"
├── provider → the company entity
├── areaServed → Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah
    └── offers → price / priceRange

    7. Location Page Schema

This is critical for local SEO. If a company operates in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, the URL architecture typically looks like the tree below, and each location page can carry appropriate local-business or location structured data — but only when the page genuinely represents that location or service area.

    Location URL architecture

    /
     /dubai/
     /abu-dhabi/
     /sharjah/

Do not spin up hundreds of thin city pages and simply swap the city name inside the schema. The content, testimonials, imagery and service information on the page must genuinely support the location claim. Our Dubai SEO service page is built exactly this way.

    8. Organization Schema

For a company's main website, Organization is extremely useful — usually on the homepage, about page or as a global company context. For a local company, use the more specific LocalBusiness subtype instead of generic Organization where appropriate.

    • @id
    • name
    • url
    • logo
    • image
    • description
    • sameAs
    • contactPoint
    • address (where applicable)

    9. Person Schema

Useful for founders, CEOs, authors, doctors, lawyers, consultants, photographers, experts and team members. It supports author and entity clarity for E-E-A-T — although schema alone does not create E-E-A-T.

    Author entity chain

    Article
       ↓
    author
       ↓
    Person
       ├── name
       ├── url
       ├── image
       ├── jobTitle
       └── sameAs

    10. BreadcrumbList Schema

Add BreadcrumbList on every website where breadcrumbs make sense. It is cheap to implement, it helps search engines understand site hierarchy, and it frequently replaces the raw URL in the SERP with a readable path.

    Visible breadcrumb

    Home
    → Appliances
    → Washing Machines
    → Samsung Washing Machine

    Schema

    BreadcrumbList
    ├── Home
    ├── Appliances
    ├── Washing Machines
    └── Product

    11. FAQPage Schema

FAQ schema should not be added simply because a page has an FAQ block. Use it only when the content meets Google's current structured-data requirements and the questions and answers are genuinely visible on the page. For most commercial sites, do not assume FAQ schema will produce FAQ rich results — Google heavily restricted that feature.

    12. HowTo Schema

For genuinely instructional content such as "How to Install a Washing Machine", HowTo can describe steps, images, tools, supplies and estimated time.

Do not use HowTo purely to chase a rich result. Eligibility and display rules change, and not every schema type generates a visible SERP feature.

    13. VideoObject Schema

If a page has an important embedded or hosted video, mark it up with VideoObject. This is especially valuable for websites publishing tutorials, product videos, demonstrations, interviews and training content.

    • name
    • description
    • thumbnailUrl
    • uploadDate
    • duration
    • contentUrl
    • embedUrl

    16. The Most Important Rule in Schema Markup

Do not think "I need as many schemas as possible." Think "what is this page actually about?" A dentist's homepage should not contain fifteen unrelated schema types just because they exist in the vocabulary.

    • Dentist homepage → Dentist
    • Dental implant service page → Service
    • Dental implant article → Article
    • Doctor / team page → Person
    • Contact / location page → appropriate LocalBusiness information
    • Breadcrumbs → BreadcrumbList

That creates a far cleaner semantic relationship between your pages than stacking types at random.

Our SEO priority order for implementing schema

    1. 1Correct primary entity schema — business, product or article.
    2. 2BreadcrumbList across the whole site.
    3. 3Organization and Person relationships for entity clarity.
    4. 4Offer / Product data for e-commerce pages.
    5. 5Review and AggregateRating only when legitimate.
    6. 6Service schema on every service page.
    7. 7Video, Recipe, Event, Course when genuinely applicable.
    8. 8FAQ and HowTo only when content and Google eligibility support it.

Most importantly: schema markup exists for search-engine understanding, not as a direct ranking shortcut. Valid structured data does not guarantee a rich result or a higher ranking — it makes you eligible and makes your entities unambiguous.

    Schema Markup FAQs

What is the best schema markup for SEO?

There is no single best schema. Use the most specific primary schema for the page — LocalBusiness subtype for a local homepage, Product for an e-commerce product page, Article or BlogPosting for content, Service for service pages — then add supporting schemas like BreadcrumbList, Organization and Person.

    Does schema markup improve rankings?

Schema markup is not a direct ranking factor. It helps search engines and AI answer engines understand your entities and can make you eligible for rich results, which lifts click-through rate. Valid schema never guarantees a rich result or a higher position.

Which schema should a local business in Dubai use?

Use the most specific valid LocalBusiness subtype — Dentist, Plumber, ExerciseGym, LegalService, RealEstateAgent — and include @id, name, url, logo, image, telephone, address, geo, openingHoursSpecification, areaServed, sameAs, priceRange and hasMap.

How many schema types should one page have?

As few as the page genuinely needs. One correct primary entity plus BreadcrumbList and publisher/author relationships is stronger than fifteen unrelated types stacked on a homepage.

Is FAQ schema still worth adding?

Add FAQPage only when the FAQ content is visible on the page and meets Google's current structured-data requirements. For most commercial sites FAQ rich results are no longer shown, so do not assume it will produce a SERP feature.

JSON-LD, Microdata or RDFa — which format should I use?

Google recommends JSON-LD. It sits in a script tag, is easy to maintain and does not depend on your HTML structure, which makes it safer during redesigns.

Want Schema Implemented Properly on Your Website?

We audit, design and deploy the full structured data stack — LocalBusiness, Service, Product, Article and Breadcrumb — so your pages are eligible for every rich result they qualify for.
